Scottish Region Awards & Dinner - 3 June 2012

Just a reminder that the Scottish Region Annual Awards & Dinner are this coming Sunday 3 June 2012.

Set in the stunning HuntingTower Hotel, Perth – www.huntingtowerhotel.co.uk – we intend to hold an afternoon of talks around current photographic techniques by three Fellows of the Institute, together with a discussion forum on the reality of making a living from photography in the current economic climate – a business perspective, which will be led by several successful Scottish photographers who have had to make changes to their practices to continue in business. We will also discuss other matters affecting our profession and we hope to get your perspective on where you think the BIPP both regionally and nationally should be heading and how you can help achieve this.

There is likely to be plenty of room for all, but we ask that you pre-register for this event by contacting the Secretary, David Bewsey FBIPP, at
secretary@bippscotland.com

Student Awards & Annual General Meeting

The Student Awards will be presented at 5pm, followed at 6pm by this year’s Annual General Meeting to which all Scottish Region members are invited.

Professional Image Awards & Dinner

In the evening there will be a Dinner at which we will present the Awards to the winners & runners-up of this year’s competition, as well as presenting the 2012 Scottish Photographer of the Year Award to the most successful entrant. All members including their guests are very welcome.

The Dinner costs just £20 per person, or £15 to those who entered more than two images in the Professional Categories. It is essential that you book and pay for your place at the Awards Dinner as soon as possible, as we have to provide the Hotel with a minimum number of diners. Please contact the Secretary, David Bewsey FBIPP, at
secretary@bippscotland.com if you would like to book.

There may still be accommodation available at HuntingTower Hotel at the “early-bird” pre-paid rate if you are quick. Please contact the hotel direct to book –

50 Year Celebration for Celebrity Photographer

On Friday 11 May 2012, Maz Mashru ABIPP and his team invited Leicestershire’s prominent businesses and VIPs to the official opening of the new gallery and showroom, which was conducted by RT Hon Keith Vaz MP.

Guests were able to see timeless images back through the decades from Maz’s career to the present day. Maz, originally an exile from Uganda, became the photojournalist for the Argus Newspaper usually photographing Idi Amin and his Army, and has now established a spectacular reputation in Leicester over the year’s photographing many famous faces including Jackie Chan, Dionne Warwick, Tony Blair, Colin Salmon, Nina Wadia.

To celebrate 50 years of trading, Maz of Leicester has moved to a spectacular events showroom and photography studio – probably one of the East Midlands' largest studios. The building, previously a factory in the 1970s, was completely derelict with no amenities. For over three decades the building had been an industrial factory with steel girders, exposed brick, loose pipe work and broken windows. Now fully restored, the showroom looks incredible with suspended ceilings, stunning lighting, specially sourced wallpaper that has the appearance of velvet, a black, off white and gold colour palette to co-ordinate with the branding.

Congratulations & best wishes to Maz and the team on the new gallery & showroom.

BIPP Yorkshire Region - Print Competition Winners

Congratulations to all of the Winners of the BIPP Yorkshire Region Print Competition 2012, held at The Owl in Hambleton, on Wednesday 18 April.

Thanks go to the judges - Jonathan Beer FBIPP, and new visitor to the region Steve Walton FBIPP from Leicester - who made very searching and detailed appraisals of the large number of entries from members, together with impressive submissions from students of Batley Art College, a most valuable experience for them, normally only experiencing in-house critiques.

The students' work greatly impressed the judges, and of the final selection Jonathan said that any one of the photographs displayed would sit alongside the main categories perfectly well. The students went home in high spirits!

Thanks also go to Stuart Clark ABIPP and the Yorkshire Region Committee for organising such an enjoyable evening.
